Applied Behaviour Analysis

ABA therapy in London

Individual ABA programmes and consultation for children and young people, designed and supervised directly by an experienced Behaviour Analyst. Goals that matter to your family, and a clear way to see whether they are being met.

What ABA therapy is

ABA therapy, explained simply

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a science of how learning and behaviour work. An ABA programme uses that understanding to teach skills that matter in a child’s life, such as communication, independence and taking part at home and school, and to reduce behaviour that causes distress or harm. Progress is checked with real information, not guesswork.

In Pooja’s practice, every programme starts with your child: what they enjoy, how they communicate, what is hard for them and what your family wants to change. ABA is not one fixed package, and not every autistic child needs it. Where it is the right fit, it should respect your child’s communication, choices and wellbeing.

Read the full guide: what is ABA?

Communication

Asking for things, saying no, asking for help or a break, using words, signs, pictures or a device.

Independence

Dressing, toileting, eating, routines and the everyday skills that give a child more control.

Learning and play

Attention, early learning, play and joining in with other children at home, nursery or school.

Coping with hard moments

Transitions, waiting, changes to routine and safer alternatives to hitting, biting or self-injury.

How a programme works

From first call to regular review

A clear route from your first conversation to a programme you can follow and review. The depth of assessment and the intensity of support depend on your child and your goals.

  1. Free initial call

Talk through what is happening, what you have tried and what you would like to change. No obligation.

  2. Assessment

Usually a parent interview and observation at home or school. Where helpful, a structured skills assessment such as the VB-MAPP or ABLLS-R.

  3. Programme design

A written programme with specific goals agreed with you, and what each person involved will do.

  4. Implementation

Sessions by trained tutors, parents or school staff, with Pooja training and supervising them to help the plan be carried out well.

  5. Review

Regular data review and meetings. Goals move on as your child progresses, and the plan changes if something is not working.

Modern ABA

What good ABA looks like today

ABA has changed a great deal. You should expect a programme that feels respectful to your child and makes sense to your family.

  • Your child’s assent matters. Sessions should be something your child is willing to take part in. Signs of distress are information, not something to push through.
  • Goals serve your child’s life. Communication, independence, safety and joining in, not compliance or making a child look less autistic.
  • Learning happens in real life. Play, routines and natural settings, not only at a table.
  • The environment changes first. Adjusting demands, communication and surroundings comes before asking a child to change.
  • Progress is visible. You can see the data and it is reviewed with you.
Progress you can see

Ongoing ABA programmes normally include access to HapMetrix, a UK data platform built for behaviour analysis practices. Your child’s goals, session notes, progress charts and key documents are kept together in a private online record, so you, the tutors and Pooja are all looking at the same up-to-date picture between reviews.

What ABA should not promise

Be cautious of anyone who promises a cure, guarantees results in a set number of weeks, or calls ABA the only option for autistic children. Progress varies with the child, the goals and the setting. A good Behaviour Analyst will tell you what is realistic and will review honestly with you.

Is ABA the same as PBS?

They overlap. Both use functional understanding of behaviour. Positive Behaviour Support puts particular emphasis on quality of life and coordinated support across settings, and is widely used in UK services. Pooja’s current work includes both. Read the UK comparison.

Pooja Shah, UKBA(cert), BCBA

Your ABA consultant

Designed and supervised by Pooja herself

Pooja works independently, so the person who assesses your child is the person who writes and supervises the programme. You are not passed between a rotating team.

She has approximately 20 years of experience in ABA and behaviour analysis. She began as a home and school tutor, worked through each level of ABA delivery, and now works as a consultant. She knows what it takes to run a programme day to day, so she writes steps with the tutors and parents who will use them in mind.

Pooja is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a certified UK Behaviour Analyst, UKBA(cert). Her current work also includes hands-on Positive Behaviour Support cases.

About Pooja

From families

Parents who have worked with Pooja

We highly recommend Pooja for her outstanding work with our son, who is on the autism spectrum. Her empathy, skill, and personalised approach have greatly benefited his development and progress. She’s patient, accommodating, and innovative in her approach, never incorporating a one size fits all attitude…
Amrita BhansaliParent, former client
Pooja was my son’s consultant for over a year, and she is a great person and a consultant. She made ABA simple by writing steps that are easy to follow… She asked the tutor to collect data to see the child’s progress and how he responded to the program provided.
Zahraa NabeelParent, former client
I started with Pooja from the start of 2023, she is great consultant and most soft-spoken person I have come across. She is very keen about her profession and with her help I have seen so much of progress in my son, since we started.

These testimonials were requested from former clients, who gave permission for them to be published. They are quoted as written, with some passages shortened (marked …). No payment or incentive was offered, and current clients are never asked for testimonials, in line with the BACB Ethics Code (sections 5.10 and 5.11). Every child is different, and these experiences are not a promise of any particular outcome.

ABA therapy in London: common questions

How much does ABA therapy cost in London?

It depends on the intensity of the programme, who delivers sessions and how much supervision is involved. Pooja’s fees are based on her time for assessment, programme design, supervision and parent training. You will get a clear written fee structure after the free initial call, before you commit.

Is ABA available on the NHS?

ABA is generally not commissioned by the NHS. Most families fund it privately, or it is secured through an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) where ABA provision is written into the plan. Pooja can provide behavioural reports for EHCP needs assessments and reviews. Read the EHCP guide.

Does my child need an autism diagnosis to start ABA?

No. ABA can support any child whose communication, behaviour or development is causing concern. Many families start while waiting for an autism assessment. Pooja does not diagnose.

How quickly will we see progress?

It varies with the child, the goals and how consistently the plan is used. Rather than promise a timeline, Pooja agrees specific goals at the start and reviews the data with you regularly, so you can see what is changing. If progress stalls, the programme is changed.

Can you supervise our existing ABA tutors?

Yes. Pooja can take on programme writing and supervision for a home team you already employ, or review an existing programme and suggest changes.

Do you work with schools?

Yes, where the school agrees. Pooja can observe, train staff and help the school and home work from the same plan. School behaviour support.
